Guitar Amp Buying Guide: Watts, Tubes & What Actually Matters

Amp shopping is full of numbers that sound impressive and mean very little. Here's what you should actually pay attention to.

If you've started browsing guitar amps, you've probably noticed the wattage numbers all over the place — 4W, 15W, 30W, 100W — and assumed bigger must be better. It isn't, and getting this wrong is the most common mistake first-time amp buyers make.

The Wattage Myth

A 15-watt tube amp is genuinely loud — loud enough to fill a small venue, and far louder than you'll ever need at home. Tube amps in particular feel much louder than their wattage suggests, because they distort and compress in a way that adds perceived volume. Unless you're actually gigging in a mid-sized venue without a PA system, you almost certainly don't need 100 watts.

Rule of thumb: for bedroom or apartment practice, 5-15 watts (tube) or 20-30 watts (solid-state/modeling) is plenty. Save the bigger heads for when you're actually playing live shows regularly.
