Kawai Upright Pianos Compared: K-15E to K-800

Kawai's K Series uprights step up mainly in height. Here is what each step gets you, and how to choose for your room and your playing.

If you have decided an upright is right for you, the next question is which Kawai. The K Series runs from the compact K-15E to the 134 cm K-800, and the jump between models is easier to understand once you see the pattern: as the cabinet gets taller, the strings get longer and the piano gains depth of tone and projection. All of them are acoustic pianos with real hammers and strings, built around Kawai's Millennium III Upright Action with ABS-Carbon parts. This guide compares the models we stock.

K-15E or K-200 if...

  • Space is tight and a compact cabinet matters most
  • You want a genuine Kawai acoustic at the most accessible price
  • You are buying for a student or a first acoustic piano

K-300 or K-400 if...

  • You want the popular 122 cm height for home or studio
  • You want longer strings and keys than the compact models
  • You want a grand-style music rack for large scores (K-400)

K-600, K-700 or K-800 if...

  • You are an advanced player or teacher who wants the most tone and projection
  • You have the room and ceiling height for a tall upright
  • You want the nearest thing to grand-piano depth from an upright

Our honest recommendation

For most homes, the K-300 is the model to start with: it hits the popular 122 cm height without the cost of the taller models. Choose the K-200 or K-15E if floor space or budget is the limit, and step up to the K-600, K-700 or K-800 if you play seriously enough to use the extra tone and projection. Whichever you choose, play it first: touch and tone are personal.
